b) The end product of catabolism of heme is bilirubin, which has no function in the body and is excreted through bile when transported to the liver. The liver cells plays the central role in the further disposal of bilirubin.The bilirubin which is formed in the reticuloendothelial cells in insoluble in water. It is therefore transported in plasma bound to albumin. When the albumin-biliruin complex reaches the sinusoidal surface of the liver, the bilirubin is taken up and it is being conjugated inside the liver with glucuronic acid to make it water soluble.
